It’s Not A Myth.
Shortlisted for The Marketing Society for Scotland’s Aspiring Creative Star Award 2021.
Brief: Create a campaign that brings black Scottish history into the mainstream.
We want to incorporate the black unicorn into the symbol of Scottish pride.
The foundation of the campaign are the fiberglass black unicorn statues that will appear around Scotland’s cities. Placed in high footfall areas where people will have the time to engage with the installations and photograph them.
Rearing unicorn statues will be placed opposite existing statues of those who profited from Scotland’s involvement in the slave trade.
The unicorn statue will act as an education and information point for those encountering them, each statue will be linked to a profile of a notable Black figure.
There will also be a quiz which will test you on your knowledge of Scotland’s black history
The interactive map, allows users to explore all the different statue locations and their profiles. The map will include walking and cycling routes, as well as suggested black-owned businesses people can stop off at on their way
We will create a black version of the unicorn emoji. We will also add a filter and stickers to Snapchat and Instagram.
Our goal is to create change and get Scotland’s black history into education. We plan to reach out to political figures and encourage them to help us make the black unicorn part of Scottish identify and include our black history within education.
In our bid to get Scotland’s black history into education, we will start by creating special books that will be sent to schools. We will create a story book version which will be sent to primary schools and a collection of Black stories for high school pupils.
